COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

Greetings. Welcome to the Club’s 104th season. Happily, the floats are now in, the  AMBASSADOR and CHAUNCEY B are also wet, the Clubhouse sports a new coat of paint, and other signals that Spring will soon turn to Summer are showing up everywhere. In creating this newsletter, your Officers, Committee Chairs, and Operations Manager have all contributed some very informative writing about the state of the Club and what to expect this Season. With utmost enthusiasm, I commend to you the entire newsletter and ask that you give it a thorough and careful read as they have all done a really fine job of conveying those things under their respective departments that you all should be aware of. Rather than run the risk that you will not heed what I have said, I provide the following highlights, or “teasers” to spur you on the way.
Your Officers have met monthly since the budget meeting in December to prepare for the upcoming season. Extra meetings involved a key personnel change and we are happy to here introduce John Tohanczyn. John joined the CYC crew on May 10 as our new Facilities Manger. Captain John began his sailing career on Gazela as a cadet when he was a teenager. He has sailed on many vessels since then, including Bill of Rights, Pride of Baltimore II, Harvey Gamage, and Spirit of Massachusetts. As well as being Captain, he is an accomplished master shipwright. John lives with his family in Hope. As Facilities Manager, John is responsible for overall maintenance of all the CYC grounds, facilities and vessels in the fleet. John reports to Vice Commodore Robert Eddy. Please give a hearty welcome aboard to John!
CYC Facilities Manager John Tohanczyn

CYC-NEWS

We are also very pleased and happy to welcome back Sue Conover as Director of Sailing and Barb Goos as Dockmaster.
Sue continues to have responsibility for the CAYSP Sailing Program, which also includes a rowing program for youngsters and a Women’s Seamanship and Sailing class. All programs offered by CAYSP are open to members and non-members, so come join the fun. Sue reports to Fleet Captain Marc Lorraine. Together they will be welcoming CYC’s long-awaited brand-spanking new, one-design fleet. See details below.
Barb’s launch driving duties will be supported by returning launch drivers Tom Crane and Jerry Entwistle. CYC endeavors to provide launch service to its members as expeditiously as possible. At times, demand for the service escalates due to various factors resulting in temporary delays. Your patience is very much appreciated during these periods.
At this writing, it appears that we will have a full membership for the 2010 season. Despite the “normal” year, 8-10 resignations and/or deaths, new members whose names are listed elsewhere in the newsletter, came off the waiting list and filled those spots. Of course this means that the waiting list has been diminished by the same number. As always, you are encouraged to consider nominating folks who you believe would make good members of the Camden Yacht Club. As a reminder, Article VIII, Section 3 of the CYC Constitution provides that “Each candidate for membership in the Camden Yacht Club must be sponsored and proposed by a member and seconded by two members, in writing, ….”. For membership applications and more information on the membership process, please see Operations Manager Elaine Booker in the CYC office or Membership Co-Chair Neale Sweet and/or Betsy Perry. More information from the Membership Committee is reported elsewhere in this Newsletter.
Also in this Newsletter are reports from Vice Commodore Robby Eddy concerning the improvements at the Club. Check out the new bulletin boards!
Rear Commodore Randy Whitney reports on the upcoming social season, Wednesday evening Sunset Seminars and food service for the 2010 season. New to CYC is Thursday Twilight Dinners! Read on for more. Take a peek at the list of seminars below as there are some very interesting topics.
Fleet Captain Marc Lorraine gives an update on the Sailing, Racing and Fleet activities planned for this coming summer. They include the prospect of putting some PHRF boats on the line Thursday nights in company with the traditional J-24 races.
In keeping with tradition, some “Camden Yacht Club Rules and Regulations” are published separately in this Newsletter as an annual reminder of some of the more pertinent and obvious rules and regulations at CYC. PLEASE, read these and communicate them to all members of your family and guests, so we have no misunderstandings.
Other items which you may find to be of interest include the following:
-a new and improved yearbook will be available for your reading pleasure and ready reference;
-new parking stickers will be issued at the beginning of the season along with a published “CYC Parking Policy”
All of the above, and what unfolds below, should foster some real excitement for what promises to be a fantastic season at the Camden Yacht Club. With such numerous and
diverse activities planned, no member should be at a loss for ways to enjoy the Club and his or her privileges of membership. In closing, I want to thank, once again, all of our Staff, Officers, Directors and Committee Chairpersons for their hard work and effort over the past 6-8 months in getting CYC ready for its 104th year. We are planning a great opening party, the Annual Chicken BBQ, the evening of Saturday, May 29th. I look forward to seeing everyone soon down at the Club. Let the sun shine!

Rob Eddy
Vice Commodore
To our Membership and Fellow Officers and Board of Directors:
Last fall we all went through the annual budgeting process. I worked with the Facilities Manager to identify issues and note considerations for making improvements to the CYC facilities. We also were working with the Dockmaster to come up with a pre-season schedule that would make going into the next season a smoother operation in the spring. I want to thank Barb Goss, our Dockmaster, for all her off season work and planning.
Also last fall, painting contractors performed the first phase of the clubhouse painting and we will have many tasks completed by the spring Chicken BBQ. You will see marked improvements around the clubhouse.
John Tohanczyn has replaced our previous Facilities Manager. He lives in Hope, Maine and comes to us well recommended and with a long term of employment with Ocean Classroom Foundation. John began full time May 10th and in a very short amount of time has digested and taken a full understanding of his duties and responsibilities. He has been great to work with and is very competent. He has a great eye for detail and what needs to be done and how to accomplish those tasks.
After the floats go in and things settle down around the club’s opening up process, we will continue working together to identify future improvements and projects for next year and the ritualistic annual budgeting process. One of the things I am keen to work with him on is establishing
maintenance tasks and schedules with a view toward establishing a maintenance log for the CYC. This will address storm related damage, dock replacement, reconstruction of float design, boat and engine replacement, etc.
Storms this past season caused damage to our south side walkway and repairs have been made to fix this. We plugged some leaks in the granite below where fill was leaching out and undermining the walkway above. Also, during this repair time, we put some proper drainage on the south side of the building which will help rain water and storm sea water to dissipate. Storms this winter that caused damage to the walkway washed seaweed all the way to the edge of the clubhouse so our new drainage should help with this to.
You will notice the following improvements; the clubhouse and boathouse repainted with doors and window trim, a new railing on the north side to prevent someone tripping over the granite retaining wall, and two new display tack boards and a newly painted ceiling in the kitchen area. Rear Commodore Whitney is overseeing some improvements to the kitchen as well. I look forward to another successful season at the CYC.
Note: Special thanks to Marc Lorraine and his son Bennett who built our new display tack boards. The club is only being charged for the materials as they donated the time and effort to build these fine units.

Welcome CYC members to the Summer of 2010!
Herewith follows the report of the Rear Commodore regarding all things social and edible.
Regarding the latter, Mike Fisher will be back in the kitchen to serve you. Our Snack Bar menu will be refreshed, highlighting some old (and soon to be new) favorites. An enhanced ordering card will hopefully keep things flowing smoothly, particularly on those busy days. Mike has now joined forces with French and Brawn as their catering arm. With Mike’s prowess in the kitchen and F&B quality foods, CYC will be well served indeed. Hungry yet?
Summer ’10 marks the introduction of something new…Thursday Twilight Dinner at CYC. Many of you have inquired about this possibility, so we’ll give a try this
summer to gauge interest (see calendar). A menu will be posted by Wednesday each week for this limited seating dinner. All we ask is that you sign up with Elaine by then, giving a headcount for the kitchen. BYOL and enjoy dinner at the Club!
A few comments…Leslie Aitken and Susan Dilworth, already battle-tested with last year’s Haul Out Party and the Winter dinner in January, will be behind our gatherings this summer. Volunteers are always welcome; new members, please contact them for your particular assignment.

Fleet Captain
Greetings Members—
I have enjoyed the relaxed pace of this winter as it gave me time to get to know some of the inner workings of the club and plan for the season. As the temperatures rise so does the level of anticipation for things to come.
As you know CAYSP, under the leadership of Randy Whitney and along with the generosity of the members will enjoy 6 New Mercury’s this summer! We hope these boats will act as a catalyst for increasing participation of all ages of sailors in many new sailing events. We are lucky to have Sue Conover back along with many returning instructors to run another successful and fun year of sailing and rowing instruction. Please see Sue’s letter for more information.
See the CAYSP kid’s float in the Memorial Day Parade. And don’t forget to attend the CAYSP Island Party on July 15th. For contact information and directions, please see Sue’s letter.
2010 CYC Mini-Cruise is Friday, August 6th through Sunday, August 8th. Aaron Henderson has again offered to organize this year’s Mini-Cruise.

This year’s cruise doesn’t conflict with the Maine Boats & Harbors Show so we hope to see more participants!
Proposed Itinerary:
-Friday August 6th-Seal Bay Vinalhaven. Raft up cocktail/dinner at 6:00pm. Water gun dinghy battle for the kids.
-Saturday August 7th- Race to Mark Island off Deer Isle Thoroughfare, anchor in Webb Cove. Scavenger hunt for kids. Catered lobster dinner provided by Old Quarry Ocean (www.oldquarry.com/shop/lobsterbakes.php) NOTE: People not coming by water can drive here and join us).
-Sunday August 8th-Race to Butter Island. Lunch on the island and cruise awards ceremony (competitive categories TBA-we will be creative). Treasure hunt for the kids. Return to Camden.
Suggestions and offers to join the “Organizing Committee” are welcome!
J-24 Race series will begin on June 3rd and run each Thursday evening throughout the season. Start time is 5:30pm. We are still hoping to run a PHRF race along with the J-24 race with their own starting sequence and different course. Interested people, please call Pete Conover 542-9594, contact and race committee. Volunteers are always needed.

The King Of Spain Series will be held July 10th and August 28th. We are hoping that by changing this to a pursuit race we will encourage more participation. We will be sending sailing members a tentative list and order of start times to show you how much further ahead of your friends you will be able to start. There will be several prize categories along with the traditional KOS race trophy. This should be a lot of fun. Please contact myself, 691-4605, or Pete Conover…And please, volunteers are needed, no experience necessary!
Pen-Bay Regatta is to be held on July 17th. This is a great way to sail with people from Rockport and Rockland Clubs who you might see from a distance all season. A run to Pulpit Harbor from Rockport, raft up for lunch, and back to Camden for awards and dinner. This is a fun laid-back event and I highly recommend it. Details available from Pete Conover or myself.
GMORA/Camden Race Weekend – (formerly the Camden Castine Race) July 31-August 1. The format of this long running series changes this summer to be run entirely out of Camden. A long course on Saturday will be followed Sunday by a shorter one. A BBQ/Reception for race participants will be held Saturday night at the Club. Have a PHRF? Why not join in?? Please email me at marclorraine@gmail.com

Some of the other events being discussed are starting up the Codger Cup on Tuesday nights using the new Mercury’s. Get out and try these new boats! Please contact Pete Conover with interest. We are also working on a powerboat “predicted log contest” that we would like to hold during a sail race and have awards at the same dinner. The predicted log contest is a great way to show off your skills and luck. It also requires one observer for each boat so people without boats can also be included. Anyone who is interested please contact me. If we can even get a handful of boats involved I think this could turn into a regular event.
Other thoughts in progress are a Solstice Weekend Fundraiser sailing event for CAYSP Scholarships and age 60 and over Mercury racing in full view of yacht club spectators.
I wish the summer were longer! Please, any ideas or interest in helping is always welcome, look forward to a safe and fun season.
Smooth Sailing!

Dear Members:
CAYSP instructors have been exchanging emails all winter and we are now more than ready to get to boating! We are so looking forward to all the bright and smiling faces arriving to learn rowing and sailing all the while having a lot of fun with us this summer.
We have a few exciting changes on the horizon for this season. The new fleet of Mercury’s will arrive via flatbed the week of June 14. We will launch and rig the boats and then take them out for a shake down cruise throughout the next week. While they are NOT a high performance boat, it will be a great compliment to our growing fleet of optimists’, 420’s and lasers. They offer a steady, kind platform for learning the basics including headsail, spinnaker and
centerboard work, reefing options for the main, sailing rudderless and other drills. Please try to come to our launching party and take a boat out with our instructors on June 27th. Look for more details.
There is a sailing class for adults! If you are interested in learning how to sail, want to refresh your skills or just want boat time in a small, stable boat to explore the harbor please email caysp@midcoast.com or check out the sailing program link on the yacht club website, www.camdenyachtclub.org
.
Many of our wonderful instructors are returning. You will see Eleanor and Camille Conover, Andrew Beauchesne, Marnie Merrill, Alexander Liem, Jack McGuire, and Spencer Bienvenue. A few of these instructors will be attending a Level I Sailing Certification program and will be right up to speed with teaching skills. A few new and hearty sailors and rowers to join us this summer as staff are Lee Webb, Davis Saltonstall, Anna Davis, Emma Conover, Julie Beauchesne and Pete Conover. We will be showing up June 21 to get the boats and classroom ready. We also are looking to have time during this week to build a strong team and to plan and deliver a most excellent program.
Please come and visit us in the classroom or on the water when you are at CYC. We always welcome supportive hearts and minds.

June 27- CAYSP Celebrates the launching of the new Mercury’s. Come down and Sail for Yourself! Soft drinks and cookies. 3PM
Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program - Special Summer(s) Ahead!
As we concluded the season last year, the CAYSP Board of Directors announced that a Capital Campaign would soon be underway to expand and transform the Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program. With too many sailors and a need to refresh the fleet, we undertook an ambitious move to buy six new Mercury sailboats.
As many of you know, we made history.
During the week of June 14th (right around the corner!), those six new boats will be delivered to our Club. The incredible generosity of our members allowed this dream to become reality. On behalf of the Board, we extend a “Thank You!” that will be heard for months to come. Our young sailors will be delighted with a seaworthy sailboat that compliments our existing fleet of Opti’s and 420’s. Adults can learn to sail; families can “race the buoys” on weekends. CAYSP can have regattas with other Maine clubs.
Please mark your calendar for the Mercury Launching Celebration on the afternoon of June 27th.
The financial health of the organization is sound and registrations are starting to come in for the summer program. Sue Conover has her team of instructors in place, all of whom are anxious for wind, sun and eager students.
Thanks again, many times, to all who supported our efforts. See you at the Club-

The Yacht Club is in excellent shape financially. We had a very manageable number of resignations this year and filled those spaces with new memberships from the waiting list. At this point, our resources are quite adequate for the club's needs. In addition, our non-profit affiliate, CAYSP, is also nicely stable financially, with all the costs of the sailing education program's new fleet completely covered by the proceeds of the capital campaign. Many thanks to everyone who has helped to keep us on an even keel -- Elaine, always, the officers and staff who've worked hard to stay on budget, and all the members who help with events and functions!
The officers regret the passing of Linda Jenkins. We extend our sincerest sympathies to her family.

Neale Sweet & Betsy Perry
Membership Chair
The Committee is pleased to report that the storm of worry that the club endured last year over the sudden surge in resignations and deaths that wiped out the waiting list has subsided. A year ago at this time, resignations and deaths had reduced the membership by 24 memberships, from 275 to 251. The waiting list had gone to zero, and the club needed to recruit new members. The reasons for the increase in resignations are not entirely clear, but they are thought to be mostly connected to the unsteady economy. The increase in deaths may be a statistical blip, or possibly an artifact of the aging demographics of the membership.
So far this year resignations and deaths have reduced the membership by only eight memberships. Thanks to the good work of the Membership Committee last year under the able leadership of Jim Lewis, the waiting list had been built back up to twelve potential new memberships, leaving a reserve of four memberships. In addition to those four memberships there are five previously approved memberships who were invited to join the club in the past year but who elected to defer initiating their membership for one year. This brings the effective total waiting list to nine memberships.
After extensive discussion the committee decided that the club should aim to increase the size of the waiting list from its current level of just under a dozen to approximately two dozen, which would bring the waiting list back to its historical levels, prior to the national financial crisis. Various strategies are being considered to boost the size the waiting list. As part of this effort to develop these strategies a subcommittee --consisting of Sally Merrill, Sally Fernald, Aaron Henderson, and the committee chair – has been formed to study the composition of the current membership. The study will be completed later this spring.

We have several new members who have joined the Club in 2010. We welcome them and are looking forward to meeting them.

Webmaster
Please use the website for information. As time marches on and postal rates go up, the CYC and other organizations are turning more towards using the web for basic information, like what are the times for meetings, events and functions.

It’s easy. Just log on to http://www.camdenyachtclub.org/, and then please book mark it on your browser so you can get to it quickly. In the Log In section, type in your first name(space)last name—like “John Smith”, or “Jane Smith”(each name of spouses should work). Then put in what you think is your password. If your password is incorrect, you will be sent an e-mail with a temporary password, good for 24 hours, during which time you should change your password to something memorable—like the name of your boat or something else that is easy to remember.
We are striving to make improvements to the website and will make a special announcement once that has been achieved.

Food Service “Minimum” Billing: Although we have printed this information before, for the benefit of our new members, we will print it again. In order to support the Food Service portion of our club, the Board of Directors voted to institute a $100 minimum bill for Food Service. This means that any member family that does not purchase at least $100 in lunches ONLY will be billed at season’s end for the difference between their actual purchases and $100. This minimum will not apply to Senior and Honorary members.
CYC Merchandise: As usual, CYC will have a variety of merchandise available in the office this summer…..new CYC ties, glassware, burgees, cookbooks, polo shirts, summer jackets, vests, hats and more. Please come take a look.
Yearbooks: The 2010 yearbooks will be ready by May 28th. For those members who attend the Chicken Barbecue on May 29th, your yearbook will be given to you when you pick up your name tag. The remaining yearbooks will be held at the office. Please stop by and pick yours up.
CYC Grill: Members are welcome to use the CYC grill. Please give the office a call if you are planning to use it. Also please remember that if you use the grill, you must clean the grill after your use. A brush will be provided.

Our neighbor to the southeast, Peter Castner, has asked for our assistance with regard to two specific situations as follows:
1. Take care to insure that young children belonging to your guests understand that the stone steps to his parking lot and his parking lot are private property which they should avoid.
2. If you are tying a dinghy or whaler to the south side of the outside dinghy dock, please tie bow and stern next to the dock. Do not let it hang on a bow line only.

BALCONY WEIGHT LIMITATIONS
Please be aware that no more than 15 people are permitted on the 2nd floor interior balcony of the Clubhouse great room at one time and no more than 20 are permitted in the exterior balcony/covered porch at any one time.
The Yacht Club has been added to the list maintained at the Town Office of those businesses and organizations that have pledged not to apply toxic chemicals to their lawns. This is one of several “going green” steps being taken or considered by the Club.
Camden Yacht Club

Rules and Regulations
This is a friendly, general, reminder of some of our more basic do’s and don’ts. Most are obvious, but it is good to remind everyone as the CYC season approaches, as follows:
Parking – Often a problem at lunch time and for social events. The protocol is that, if you park behind someone, you MUST leave your keys in the car – no exceptions. We are scheduling our Launch Drivers such that, hopefully, one will be available to assist in moving cars around. Please no long term, overnight, parking at CYC. If you must leave your car overnight, please secure permission and a place to park it from the Dockmaster or Launch Driver on duty. All CYC member cars must have a sticker and new stickers along with a copy of the “CYC Parking Policy” will be issued at the start of the season. See Elaine Booker in the office.
Cell phones – NO, not welcome. Please turn them off when using the CYC facilities. If you must speak with someone on your cell, please do it in your car or on Bay View Street.
Trash/Dumpster – For use only for trash from your boat or returnables from an outing on your boat. Please deposit trash bags directly in the dumpster, inside the fence, in the corner of the parking lot. Returnables go in the barrel so marked on the boathouse porch.
Dogs – On leash at all times. NEVER on the front lawn or in the clubhouse for sanitary reasons. Clean up after your dog. Poop bags are available in the Dockmaster’s office.
Ice Machine – Ice costs money. If you do not pay, it costs ALL CYC members money. Please either pay cash to the Launch Driver or leave a note in the Dockmaster’s office with your name and how much ice you took and you will be billed.
Adult children and guests using the CYC facilities – MUST be accompanied by the member. Please do not send your adult children and/or other guests to CYC for lunch without you and tell them to “just charge it to me”. You must accompany them.
.
Business use of docks and launch – CYC is NOT a commercial marina. If you are obtaining revenue from your boat, please use commercial services available in the area and charge your customer accordingly.
Shoes are required in the dining area per Board of Health regulations.
Life jackets are required for all children under 12 years old on docks and floats without an adult and for all sailing students. Swimming off the floats is discouraged. Sitting along the sea wall, especially for small children, is dangerous. Please use caution.
All of the above are common sense. Please use common sense and enjoy the summer.
