COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Greetings. Welcome to the Club’s 104th season. Happily, the floats are now in, the AMBASSADOR and CHAUNCEY B are also wet, the Clubhouse sports a new coat of paint, and other signals that Spring will soon turn to Summer are showing up everywhere. In creating this newsletter, your Officers, Committee Chairs, and Operations Manager have all contributed some very informative writing about the state of the Club and what to expect this Season. With utmost enthusiasm, I commend to you the entire newsletter and ask that you give it a thorough and careful read as they have all done a really fine job of conveying those things under their respective departments that you all should be aware of. Rather than run the risk that you will not heed what I have said, I provide the following highlights, or “teasers” to spur you on the way.
Your Officers have met monthly since the budget meeting in December to prepare for the upcoming season. Extra meetings involved a key personnel change and we are happy to here introduce John Tohanczyn. John joined the CYC crew on May 10 as our new Facilities Manger. Captain John began his sailing career on Gazela as a cadet when he was a teenager. He has sailed on many vessels since then, including Bill of Rights, Pride of Baltimore II, Harvey Gamage, and Spirit of Massachusetts. As well as being Captain, he is an accomplished master shipwright. John lives with his family in Hope. As Facilities Manager, John is responsible for overall maintenance of all the CYC grounds, facilities and vessels in the fleet. John reports to Vice Commodore Robert Eddy. Please give a hearty welcome aboard to John!
CYC Facilities Manager John Tohanczyn
CYC-NEWS
We are also very pleased and happy to welcome back Sue Conover as Director of Sailing and Barb Goos as Dockmaster.
Sue continues to have responsibility for the CAYSP Sailing Program, which also includes a rowing program for youngsters and a Women’s Seamanship and Sailing class. All programs offered by CAYSP are open to members and non-members, so come join the fun. Sue reports to Fleet Captain Marc Lorraine. Together they will be welcoming CYC’s long-awaited brand-spanking new, one-design fleet. See details below.
Barb’s launch driving duties will be supported by returning launch drivers Tom Crane and Jerry Entwistle. CYC endeavors to provide launch service to its members as expeditiously as possible. At times, demand for the service escalates due to various factors resulting in temporary delays. Your patience is very much appreciated during these periods.
At this writing, it appears that we will have a full membership for the 2010 season. Despite the “normal” year, 8-10 resignations and/or deaths, new members whose names are listed elsewhere in the newsletter, came off the waiting list and filled those spots. Of course this means that the waiting list has been diminished by the same number. As always, you are encouraged to consider nominating folks who you believe would make good members of the Camden Yacht Club. As a reminder, Article VIII, Section 3 of the CYC Constitution provides that “Each candidate for membership in the Camden Yacht Club must be sponsored and proposed by a member and seconded by two members, in writing, ….”. For membership applications and more information on the membership process, please see Operations Manager Elaine Booker in the CYC office or Membership Co-Chair Neale Sweet and/or Betsy Perry. More information from the Membership Committee is reported elsewhere in this Newsletter.
Also in this Newsletter are reports from Vice Commodore Robby Eddy concerning the improvements at the Club. Check out the new bulletin boards!
Rear Commodore Randy Whitney reports on the upcoming social season, Wednesday evening Sunset Seminars and food service for the 2010 season. New to CYC is Thursday Twilight Dinners! Read on for more. Take a peek at the list of seminars below as there are some very interesting topics.
Fleet Captain Marc Lorraine gives an update on the Sailing, Racing and Fleet activities planned for this coming summer. They include the prospect of putting some PHRF boats on the line Thursday nights in company with the traditional J-24 races.
In keeping with tradition, some “Camden Yacht Club Rules and Regulations” are published separately in this Newsletter as an annual reminder of some of the more pertinent and obvious rules and regulations at CYC. PLEASE, read these and communicate them to all members of your family and guests, so we have no misunderstandings.
Other items which you may find to be of interest include the following:
-a new and improved yearbook will be available for your reading pleasure and ready reference;
-new parking stickers will be issued at the beginning of the season along with a published “CYC Parking Policy”
All of the above, and what unfolds below, should foster some real excitement for what promises to be a fantastic season at the Camden Yacht Club. With such numerous and
diverse activities planned, no member should be at a loss for ways to enjoy the Club and his or her privileges of membership. In closing, I want to thank, once again, all of our Staff, Officers, Directors and Committee Chairpersons for their hard work and effort over the past 6-8 months in getting CYC ready for its 104th year. We are planning a great opening party, the Annual Chicken BBQ, the evening of Saturday, May 29th. I look forward to seeing everyone soon down at the Club. Let the sun shine!

To our Membership and Fellow Officers and Board of Directors:
Last fall we all went through the annual budgeting process. I worked with the Facilities Manager to identify issues and note considerations for making improvements to the CYC facilities. We also were working with the Dockmaster to come up with a pre-season schedule that would make going into the next season a smoother operation in the spring. I want to thank Barb Goss, our Dockmaster, for all her off season work and planning.
Also last fall, painting contractors performed the first phase of the clubhouse painting and we will have many tasks completed by the spring Chicken BBQ. You will see marked improvements around the clubhouse.
John Tohanczyn has replaced our previous Facilities Manager. He lives in Hope, Maine and comes to us well recommended and with a long term of employment with Ocean Classroom Foundation. John began full time May 10th and in a very short amount of time has digested and taken a full understanding of his duties and responsibilities. He has been great to work with and is very competent. He has a great eye for detail and what needs to be done and how to accomplish those tasks.
After the floats go in and things settle down around the club’s opening up process, we will continue working together to identify future improvements and projects for next year and the ritualistic annual budgeting process. One of the things I am keen to work with him on is establishing
maintenance tasks and schedules with a view toward establishing a maintenance log for the CYC. This will address storm related damage, dock replacement, reconstruction of float design, boat and engine replacement, etc.
Storms this past season caused damage to our south side walkway and repairs have been made to fix this. We plugged some leaks in the granite below where fill was leaching out and undermining the walkway above. Also, during this repair time, we put some proper drainage on the south side of the building which will help rain water and storm sea water to dissipate. Storms this winter that caused damage to the walkway washed seaweed all the way to the edge of the clubhouse so our new drainage should help with this to.
You will notice the following improvements; the clubhouse and boathouse repainted with doors and window trim, a new railing on the north side to prevent someone tripping over the granite retaining wall, and two new display tack boards and a newly painted ceiling in the kitchen area. Rear Commodore Whitney is overseeing some improvements to the kitchen as well. I look forward to another successful season at the CYC.
Note: Special thanks to Marc Lorraine and his son Bennett who built our new display tack boards. The club is only being charged for the materials as they donated the time and effort to build these fine units.

With Mike’s prowess in the kitchen and F&B quality foods, CYC will be well served indeed. Hungry yet?
Summer ’10 marks the introduction of something new…Thursday Twilight Dinner at CYC. Many of you have inquired about this possibility, so we’ll give a try this
summer to gauge interest (see calendar). A menu will be posted by Wednesday each week for this limited seating dinner. All we ask is that you sign up with Elaine by then, giving a headcount for the kitchen. BYOL and enjoy dinner at the Club!
A few comments…Leslie Aitken and Susan Dilworth, already battle-tested with last year’s Haul Out Party and the Winter dinner in January, will be behind our gatherings this summer. Volunteers are always welcome; new members, please contact them for your particular assignment.

Greetings Members—
I have enjoyed the relaxed pace of this winter as it gave me time to get to know some of the inner workings of the club and plan for the season. As the temperatures rise so does the level of anticipation for things to come.
As you know CAYSP, under the leadership of Randy Whitney and along with the generosity of the members will enjoy 6 New Mercury’s this summer! We hope these boats will act as a catalyst for increasing participation of all ages of sailors in many new sailing events. We are lucky to have Sue Conover back along with many returning instructors to run another successful and fun year of sailing and rowing instruction. Please see Sue’s letter for more information.
See the CAYSP kid’s float in the Memorial Day Parade. And don’t forget to attend the CAYSP Island Party on July 15th. For contact information and directions, please see Sue’s letter.
2010 CYC Mini-Cruise is Friday, August 6th through Sunday, August 8th. Aaron Henderson has again offered to organize this year’s Mini-Cruise.
This year’s cruise doesn’t conflict with the Maine Boats & Harbors Show so we hope to see more participants!
Proposed Itinerary:
-Friday August 6th-Seal Bay Vinalhaven. Raft up cocktail/dinner at 6:00pm. Water gun dinghy battle for the kids.
-Saturday August 7th- Race to Mark Island off Deer Isle Thoroughfare, anchor in Webb Cove. Scavenger hunt for kids. Catered lobster dinner provided by Old Quarry Ocean (www.oldquarry.com/shop/lobsterbakes.php) NOTE: People not coming by water can drive here and join us).
-Sunday August 8th-Race to Butter Island. Lunch on the island and cruise awards ceremony (competitive categories TBA-we will be creative). Treasure hunt for the kids. Return to Camden.
Suggestions and offers to join the “Organizing Committee” are welcome!
J-24 Race series will begin on June 3rd and run each Thursday evening throughout the season. Start time is 5:30pm. We are still hoping to run a PHRF race along with the J-24 race with their own starting sequence and different course. Interested people, please call Pete Conover 542-9594, contact and race committee. Volunteers are always needed.
The King Of Spain Series will be held July 10th and August 28th. We are hoping that by changing this to a pursuit race we will encourage more participation. We will be sending sailing members a tentative list and order of start times to show you how much further ahead of your friends you will be able to start. There will be several prize categories along with the traditional KOS race trophy. This should be a lot of fun. Please contact myself, 691-4605, or Pete Conover…And please, volunteers are needed, no experience necessary!
Pen-Bay Regatta is to be held on July 17th. This is a great way to sail with people from Rockport and Rockland Clubs who you might see from a distance all season. A run to Pulpit Harbor from Rockport, raft up for lunch, and back to Camden for awards and dinner. This is a fun laid-back event and I highly recommend it. Details available from Pete Conover or myself.
GMORA/Camden Race Weekend – (formerly the Camden Castine Race) July 31-August 1. The format of this long running series changes this summer to be run entirely out of Camden. A long course on Saturday will be followed Sunday by a shorter one. A BBQ/Reception for race participants will be held Saturday night at the Club. Have a PHRF? Why not join in?? Please email me at marclorraine@gmail.com
Some of the other events being discussed are starting up the Codger Cup on Tuesday nights using the new Mercury’s. Get out and try these new boats! Please contact Pete Conover with interest. We are also working on a powerboat “predicted log contest” that we would like to hold during a sail race and have awards at the same dinner. The predicted log contest is a great way to show off your skills and luck. It also requires one observer for each boat so people without boats can also be included. Anyone who is interested please contact me. If we can even get a handful of boats involved I think this could turn into a regular event.
Other thoughts in progress are a Solstice Weekend Fundraiser sailing event for CAYSP Scholarships and age 60 and over Mercury racing in full view of yacht club spectators.
I wish the summer were longer! Please, any ideas or interest in helping is always welcome, look forward to a safe and fun season.
Smooth Sailing!

Dear Members:
CAYSP instructors have been exchanging emails all winter and we are now more than ready to get to boating! We are so looking forward to all the bright and smiling faces arriving to learn rowing and sailing all the while having a lot of fun with us this summer.
We have a few exciting changes on the horizon for this season. The new fleet of Mercury’s will arrive via flatbed the week of June 14. We will launch and rig the boats and then take them out for a shake down cruise throughout the next week. While they are NOT a high performance boat, it will be a great compliment to our growing fleet of optimists’, 420’s and lasers. They offer a steady, kind platform for learning the basics including headsail, spinnaker and
centerboard work, reefing options for the main, sailing rudderless and other drills. Please try to come to our launching party and take a boat out with our instructors on June 27th. Look for more details.
There is a sailing class for adults! If you are interested in learning how to sail, want to refresh your skills or just want boat time in a small, stable boat to explore the harbor please email caysp@midcoast.com or check out the sailing program link on the yacht club website, www.camdenyachtclub.org
.
Many of our wonderful instructors are returning. You will see Eleanor and Camille Conover, Andrew Beauchesne, Marnie Merrill, Alexander Liem, Jack McGuire, and Spencer Bienvenue. A few of these instructors will be attending a Level I Sailing Certification program and will be right up to speed with teaching skills. A few new and hearty sailors and rowers to join us this summer as staff are Lee Webb, Davis Saltonstall, Anna Davis, Emma Conover, Julie Beauchesne and Pete Conover. We will be showing up June 21 to get the boats and classroom ready. We also are looking to have time during this week to build a strong team and to plan and deliver a most excellent program.
Please come and visit us in the classroom or on the water when you are at CYC. We always welcome supportive hearts and minds.

Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program - Special Summer(s) Ahead!
As we concluded the season last year, the CAYSP Board of Directors announced that a Capital Campaign would soon be underway to expand and transform the Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program. With too many sailors and a need to refresh the fleet, we undertook an ambitious move to buy six new Mercury sailboats.
As many of you know, we made history.
During the week of June 14th (right around the corner!), those six new boats will be delivered to our Club. The incredible generosity of our members allowed this dream to become reality. On behalf of the Board, we extend a “Thank You!” that will be heard for months to come. Our young sailors will be delighted with a seaworthy sailboat that compliments our existing fleet of Opti’s and 420’s. Adults can learn to sail; families can “race the buoys” on weekends. CAYSP can have regattas with other Maine clubs.
Please mark your calendar for the Mercury Launching Celebration on the afternoon of June 27th.
The financial health of the organization is sound and registrations are starting to come in for the summer program. Sue Conover has her team of instructors in place, all of whom are anxious for wind, sun and eager students.
Thanks again, many times, to all who supported our efforts. See you at the Club-

The Yacht Club is in excellent shape financially. We had a very manageable number of resignations this year and filled those spaces with new memberships from the waiting list. At this point, our resources are quite adequate for the club's needs. In addition, our non-profit affiliate, CAYSP, is also nicely stable financially, with all the costs of the sailing education program's new fleet completely covered by the proceeds of the capital campaign. Many thanks to everyone who has helped to keep us on an even keel -- Elaine, always, the officers and staff who've worked hard to stay on budget, and all the members who help with events and functions!
The officers regret the passing of Linda Jenkins. We extend our sincerest sympathies to her family.

Membership Chair
The Committee is pleased to report that the storm of worry that the club endured last year over the sudden surge in resignations and deaths that wiped out the waiting list has subsided. A year ago at this time, resignations and deaths had reduced the membership by 24 memberships, from 275 to 251. The waiting list had gone to zero, and the club needed to recruit new members. The reasons for the increase in resignations are not entirely clear, but they are thought to be mostly connected to the unsteady economy. The increase in deaths may be a statistical blip, or possibly an artifact of the aging demographics of the membership.
So far this year resignations and deaths have reduced the membership by only eight memberships. Thanks to the good work of the Membership Committee last year under the able leadership of Jim Lewis, the waiting list had been built back up to twelve potential new memberships, leaving a reserve of four memberships. In addition to those four memberships there are five previously approved memberships who were invited to join the club in the past year but who elected to defer initiating their membership for one year. This brings the effective total waiting list to nine memberships.
After extensive discussion the committee decided that the club should aim to increase the size of the waiting list from its current level of just under a dozen to approximately two dozen, which would bring the waiting list back to its historical levels, prior to the national financial crisis. Various strategies are being considered to boost the size the waiting list. As part of this effort to develop these strategies a subcommittee --consisting of Sally Merrill, Sally Fernald, Aaron Henderson, and the committee chair – has been formed to study the composition of the current membership. The study will be completed later this spring.
We have several new members who have joined the Club in 2010. We welcome them and are looking forward to meeting them.

Please use the website for information. As time marches on and postal rates go up, the CYC and other organizations are turning more towards using the web for basic information, like what are the times for meetings, events and functions.
It’s easy. Just log on to http://www.camdenyachtclub.org/, and then please book mark it on your browser so you can get to it quickly. In the Log In section, type in your first name(space)last name—like “John Smith”, or “Jane Smith”(each name of spouses should work). Then put in what you think is your password. If your password is incorrect, you will be sent an e-mail with a temporary password, good for 24 hours, during which time you should change your password to something memorable—like the name of your boat or something else that is easy to remember.
We are striving to make improvements to the website and will make a special announcement once that has been achieved.

Food Service “Minimum” Billing: Although we have printed this information before, for the benefit of our new members, we will print it again. In order to support the Food Service portion of our club, the Board of Directors voted to institute a $100 minimum bill for Food Service. This means that any member family that does not purchase at least $100 in lunches ONLY will be billed at season’s end for the difference between their actual purchases and $100. This minimum will not apply to Senior and Honorary members.
CYC Merchandise: As usual, CYC will have a variety of merchandise available in the office this summer…..new CYC ties, glassware, burgees, cookbooks, polo shirts, summer jackets, vests, hats and more. Please come take a look.
Yearbooks: The 2010 yearbooks will be ready by May 28th. For those members who attend the Chicken Barbecue on May 29th, your yearbook will be given to you when you pick up your name tag. The remaining yearbooks will be held at the office. Please stop by and pick yours up.
CYC Grill: Members are welcome to use the CYC grill. Please give the office a call if you are planning to use it. Also please remember that if you use the grill, you must clean the grill after your use. A brush will be provided.
Our neighbor to the southeast, Peter Castner, has asked for our assistance with regard to two specific situations as follows:
1. Take care to insure that young children belonging to your guests understand that the stone steps to his parking lot and his parking lot are private property which they should avoid.
2. If you are tying a dinghy or whaler to the south side of the outside dinghy dock, please tie bow and stern next to the dock. Do not let it hang on a bow line only.
BALCONY WEIGHT LIMITATIONS
Please be aware that no more than 15 people are permitted on the 2nd floor interior balcony of the Clubhouse great room at one time and no more than 20 are permitted in the exterior balcony/covered porch at any one time.
The Yacht Club has been added to the list maintained at the Town Office of those businesses and organizations that have pledged not to apply toxic chemicals to their lawns. This is one of several “going green” steps being taken or considered by the Club.
Camden Yacht Club
Rules and Regulations
This is a friendly, general, reminder of some of our more basic do’s and don’ts. Most are obvious, but it is good to remind everyone as the CYC season approaches, as follows:
Parking – Often a problem at lunch time and for social events. The protocol is that, if you park behind someone, you MUST leave your keys in the car – no exceptions. We are scheduling our Launch Drivers such that, hopefully, one will be available to assist in moving cars around. Please no long term, overnight, parking at CYC. If you must leave your car overnight, please secure permission and a place to park it from the Dockmaster or Launch Driver on duty. All CYC member cars must have a sticker and new stickers along with a copy of the “CYC Parking Policy” will be issued at the start of the season. See Elaine Booker in the office.
Cell phones – NO, not welcome. Please turn them off when using the CYC facilities. If you must speak with someone on your cell, please do it in your car or on Bay View Street.
Trash/Dumpster – For use only for trash from your boat or returnables from an outing on your boat. Please deposit trash bags directly in the dumpster, inside the fence, in the corner of the parking lot. Returnables go in the barrel so marked on the boathouse porch.
Dogs – On leash at all times. NEVER on the front lawn or in the clubhouse for sanitary reasons. Clean up after your dog. Poop bags are available in the Dockmaster’s office.
Ice Machine – Ice costs money. If you do not pay, it costs ALL CYC members money. Please either pay cash to the Launch Driver or leave a note in the Dockmaster’s office with your name and how much ice you took and you will be billed.
Adult children and guests using the CYC facilities – MUST be accompanied by the member. Please do not send your adult children and/or other guests to CYC for lunch without you and tell them to “just charge it to me”. You must accompany them.
.
Business use of docks and launch – CYC is NOT a commercial marina. If you are obtaining revenue from your boat, please use commercial services available in the area and charge your customer accordingly.
Shoes are required in the dining area per Board of Health regulations.
Life jackets are required for all children under 12 years old on docks and floats without an adult and for all sailing students. Swimming off the floats is discouraged. Sitting along the sea wall, especially for small children, is dangerous. Please use caution.
All of the above are common sense. Please use common sense and enjoy the summer.
The real version of the CYC newsletter is in .pdf format. Download it, share it with your friends and enjoy the great pictures.

Published separately in this newsletter is the annual reminder of some of the more pertinent and obvious rules and regulations at CYC. PLEASE, read these and communicate them to all members of your family and guests, so we have no misunderstandings.
Other tidbits of information, which you may find useful, include the following:
In closing, I want to thank, once again, all our Staff, Officers, Directors and Committee Chairpersons for their hard work and effort over the past 6-8 months in getting CYC ready for its 103rd year. As you can see from my comments above and from those of your other Officers, it has been a challenge; but, all is well at your club. The floats go in May 19th and we are planning a great opening party, the annual Chicken BBQ, the evening of Saturday, May 23rd. So please come down and have fun. I look forward to seeing everyone soon at CYC.

In an effort to keep you up-to-date on topics falling under Vice Commodore oversight as we begin a new season, please see the following comments.
Employees
You all should have received an email announcing the hiring of Cullen Teel of Rockland as our new Facilities Manager, which is re-printed here:
WELCOME ABOARD CULLEN TEEL
Greetings,
It is my pleasure to announce to the membership that Mr. Cullen Teel will be assuming the duties of Camden Yacht Club Facilities Manager this season, replacing Doug Hall. Cullen has a deep experience working in commercial and private marine environments, including vessel operations, vessel repair, maintenance, and building and marina facility management and operations. He comes to CYC from Atlantic Challenge in Rockland where he was the Waterfront Programs Director. Cullen holds a current and valid United States Coast Guard Master's License with a 50 ton, near coastal endorsement, and will be operating the launch in addition to his other duties at the Club. He is also an American Sailing Association Certified Instructor and has certification in Boating Safety, Shipboard First Aid and CPR. Cullen makes his home in Rockland with his wife and two children. When you see him, please take the opportunity to introduce yourself and extend a very warm welcome to our newest employee."
In addition to Cullen, Barb Goos starts her second season of yeoman duties as Dockmaster. She will be joined by returning launch drivers, Jerry Entwistle and Luke Morong. Additional part-time drivers may also fill out the roster as necessary to insure un-interrupted service.
It goes without saying that Elaine will be manning the office with her usual efficiency in her continuing capacity of Operations Manager.
Buildings & Grounds
The second phase of the kitchen floor replacement is progressing in a timely fashion and should be complete by the time you read this. Member Marc Lorraine of Lorraine Construction and his crew built a new sub-floor and the tile purchased last year has been put in place so that we now have a new, uniform floor throughout the entire kitchen. Electrical conduit which previously had provided service from the overhead has now been hidden.
Lorraine Construction will also be installing a ventilation fan in the kitchen to provide much-needed cooling in the area of the dish washer and walk-in freezer. In addition, work is proceeding in the Clubhouse toward refinishing the wood floor that was showing a good deal of wear. Members are reminded to exercise care when assisting in putting the metal chairs away after an event in order that we preserve the new finish as long as possible.
Elsewhere around the Club, caps are being installed on top of the pilings to help preserve them and to improve their overall appearance. Re-seeding disrupted grass (snowplow damage) is ongoing as are the usual landscaping chores undertaken every year at this time. Wayfarer Marine will begin to install Ambassador's new engine on May 20th. In the meantime, Chauncy B will be seeing active duty as the assist vessel during "floats are in" day, and as the back-up launch. All in all it appears at this time that the Club will be fully functional with an appearance to be proud of as we start the 2009 season.
Happy Sailing!

Social Events
Welcome new members and all of our CYC membership to a new summer of events at the club. With our new caterer in place, Mike Fisher and his staff are preparing to serve us all. Mike has been working on new menus for the lunch and dinner events. A list of events follows in this newsletter section.
We have a special community event planned on Sunday, June 28th . We will be honoring and paying tribute to Barbara Dyer. Following is the content from invitations being sent to Barbie's friends and family and to community members. Please mark your calendar and come down and meet Barbie. She will have memorabilia, photo albums and she will sign and sell some of her published books on the history of Camden.
Please join us in a public celebration paying tribute to Barbara F. Dyer, Camden's Unofficial Official town Historian. Let's celebrate Barbie's significant contributions to our town and our town library Walsh History Center.
Date: Sunday, June 28, 2009
Place: Camden Yacht Club
Time: 11:00 to 2:00 pm.
11:00 to 12:00 Welcome address and Speakers.
12:00-2:00 pm. Pot Luck lunch and dessert
Coffee, iced tea and lemonade will be provided by the CYC
RSVP: The Camden Yacht Club's business office 236-7033 ext # 4
If you are an individual or business that would like to take advantage in supporting this event, please contact me 236-6579. We are planning that The Herald Gazette will run an article about Barbie's interest in history. This will be published twice on Thursday, June 18th and 25th. This is a great advertising opportunity for your business or to thank Barbie and wish her well. Block advertising spaces surrounding the article will be available for $100.00/per space. Revenue generated from this will offset expenses, advertising costs with any residuals going to the Camden Public Library's Walsh History Center.
Sunset Seminars:
We have our schedule set for five speakers this summer. Three will be in July and two will be in August. We are doing this differently due to the fact that there are many members who miss out on hearing part of the series due to their vacation schedules.
Jul.y 8
We have returning Esperanza Stancioff who will discuss her years' sabbatical focused on the effects on the Gulf of Maine from global warming.
July 15th
We will have CYC member Matt Simmons. Matt is the author of the book Twilight on the Desert . His presentation will be on Energy, Global oil reserves and his new ventures in Rockland, Maine with the emerging Energy Institute.
July 22nd
Break
July 29th
We have returning Matt Mountain of the Space Telescope Science Institute. Given we are in the 400 anniversary of when Galileo turned the first telescope to the sky, Matt will present a historical review of the impact of the telescope, of course using Hubble as pinnacle (so far) of what has been archived.
August 5th
We will have CYC member Jim McCully. Jim is the author of Beyond the Moon: A Conversational, Common Sense Guide to Understanding the Tides. Jim's presentation The Tides Explained In Plain English will emphasize the tides in the Gulf of Maine along with the general principles that create the myriad tidal patterns found around the globe.
August 12th
Lastly, Camden resident Greg Dorr will discuss his volunteer time in the Peace Corp in Malawi, Africa.
KITCHEN UPDATES:
Mike Fisher of Mike's Catering will do our concession this year. Mike is a seasoned veteran in the food service industry in this area. We have discussed several operational and food/menu changes and explored some new approaches for the upcoming season. Given notice, Mike will prepare box lunches for members who want to get lunch and go sailing. Please give him some reasonable advance notice and it will be billed to your account the same way it is done now for a sit down lunch.
The second phase of the kitchen floor replacement is nearing completion. Marc Lorraine of Lorraine Construction has done a great job. Marc will be installing additional ventilation in the dishwashing section of the kitchen to improve air flow and cooling from the ice machine and walk-in cooler compressors.
Thank you all. As you can see from the planned 2009 calendar, there are plenty of things to lend a helping hand with. We always need willing volunteers so contact Laney at the office to add your name to an event.

Ahoy! Before we all know it, the summer of 2009 will be in full swing. If you have been a faithful reader of the CYC Newsletter, you are well aware that, even though the windows at the Club are shuttered in the off-season, a tremendous amount of effort still goes on in preparation for activities that we all so enjoy. Please take a moment to review some important updates below; mark your calendar!
CAYSP, the Junior Sailing Program, under the very capable guidance of Sue Conover, is fully staffed and equipped for our younger sailors. We are lucky to have a strong and solid team returning to instruct this summer. During the mornings, for the beginning and basic sailing classes, Eleanor Conover, Brydon Mitchell and Lizzie Mitchell will be guiding our youngest and newest sailors into the world of boating. All three of them have been sailing for many years and will surely bring upbeat energy and security to our new sailors as they are brought out onto the water.
Working along side of them, is the very competent and enthusiastic crew of four including Andrew Beauchesne, Camille Conover, Alexander Liem and Marnie Merrill. These four will also plug into the Rowing class, designed for ages 6 and 7 and led by Nina Jones, a Camden local who is often found around the harbor on all kinds of boats. We have two steady and caring apprentices, Jack McGuire and Spencer Bienvenue, who will be ready to help in any way possible.
The afternoons will bring Brydon to lead the 420 racing class. She will be practicing with the class in the harbor daily as well as coaching at regattas state-wide and throughout New England.
Lizzie will take on the Optimist Racing class and will be traveling to races as well. The intermediate sailing class will see new faces to the yacht club but all are local sailors who are excited to share their love for boating. Jen Andrus, Steve Pixley, Gabe Finkelstein and Heather Wyman will work this class on a rotating basis.
Our crew of four from the morning will be plugging into this class as well. David Beauchesne will be standing by to teach the Introduction to Racing class. Eleanor will be there to guide us all through each afternoon. We are very happy to offer such a diverse group of instructors. Each come with their strengths and are ready to work hard and long to bring their excitement with sailing to others.
New this summer is a pilot program with Otolith Day Camp of Camden, providing a full-day of activity in conjunction with CAYSP afternoon sailing classes. Please visit www.otolithed.org /summer for more information about this full-day offering.
Three Optis are on their way to add to our fleet making a total of 17! A new/slightly used 420 will arrive in June bringing that fleet to a total of 8 boats.
A women's seamanship course is being offered this summer. It is a four-day intensive course, held August 3-6. The first two days will be based at CYC and then the group will prepare for an overnight. This will be taught by two very competent sailors, Ry Hills and Meredith Currier. This course is limited to ten students, however there still is room to sign up. Don't miss this opportunity in your own backyard!
The annual July 4th (held on Friday, July 3rd) boat parade will be held in the morning and based out of the yacht club. The Island Party is scheduled for July 16th. Awards night will end the season on August 14 and is a great way to celebrate all the learning and hard work during the summer. All are invited and welcome to any of these fun-filled events.
A reminder to members, if you are interested in signing up for sailing this summer with CAYSP, please go to www.camdenyachtclub.org website, sailing link and learn about all the options. We look forward to seeing you at the yacht club!
CYC Cruise is scheduled for August 7-9, or longer, if you wish. Aaron Henderson is the chairperson/skipper of this weekend.
King of Spain Race Series, while thwarted by poor weather last year, will be held July 11 and August 15. Start times will be a bit later, 1:30-2PM, to hopefully secure the best wind conditions. Please note that on August 15th, there will be a dinner and award ceremony after the race that night, open to all members. All Adult Sail Racing awards will be given out then.
The Camden-Castine Race will be held on August 1-2 this summer. Volunteers are needed! No experience necessary. If you can follow directions, want to have fun, and want to support big boat racing on the coast of Maine..."Come on Down!" We sure need your help.
The J24 series will start up soon, right after Memorial Day weekend. Start times are at 5:30pm, each Thursday, right through to Labor Day week. Again, Race Committee volunteers are needed to run these races. Pete Conover is Fleet Captain for the J24's. It is our hope to run PHRF races along with the J24's; same Race Committee, different course. If you are interested, let me know.
The Women's Seamanship Class is planned for August 3-6. A four day, instructive and fun experience on the basics of sailing and water safety for women members of CYC. Two days of shore side instruction followed by an overnight at a nearby island, this promises to be just what the "first mate" ordered when the "captain" is snoozing or reading his book! Sue Conover or I can help with your questions.
And finally, each year we call out for volunteers, as I have already done above, for the many tasks that need to get done on the Club waterfront. The phrase, "If everyone lifts, there is no burden", comes to mind when I look at all that needs attention for the summer activities. Please consider offering your time- a lot or a little- it all adds up to be very helpful.
Thanks for your time reading these notes. I look forward to seeing all of you in just a few months! jrwhit1@verizon.net

While there have been a few surprises this year, the Club's overall financial condition continues to be in line with expectations for the year. We had unbudgeted costs as the result of staff changes. We also had an unusually high number of deaths and resignations among the membership this year. At the same time, the high number of membership openings were filled from our waiting list, generating an unusually high total for initiation fees. The net result is that our cash position is more than adequate for this year's needs.

Membership Chair
Your Membership Committee has been very busy this year processing applications and conducting interviews.
The club expects to have 25 new members in 2009. The Commodore has sent 18 invitations this year which have been accepted by the candidates. We have 5 candidates who have not met the requirement of meeting the required number of officers or whose interview has not been completed. We expect the membership process for 2009 to be completed by mid-summer which assures us a full membership for 2009.
At this time, as we are winding down the activities for 2009, we must begin thinking of building our waiting list for 2010 and beyond. We would like to suggest that if you have a candidate in mind to please pick up an application from Elaine, complete and return to Elaine.
As these new applications are returned, we will schedule interviews. Our committee objective will be to complete all interviews on the new applications this summer so that we can have a lengthy list of recommended candidates for the 2010 season.
Also don't forget that our bylaws provide for candidates not exceeding age 35 to join as a Junior member. A Junior member pays one-half the annual dues of a Regular member and a Junior member has the option of paying the initiation fee over a period of five years.
We wish to thank our committee members for the wonderful support they have given us this year in fulfilling the objective of having a full membership.
The officers regret the passing of several members since last season. We extend our sincerest sympathies to their families. Those members are:

Applications for new memberships: If you are proposing/sponsoring or seconding a new member and have been asked to write a letter of recommendation, please send this letter to the Proposer/Sponsor - not to the office. Only completed applications along with the recommendation letters are accepted by the office.
Proposers/Sponsors for new memberships: Please be reminded that one of the requirements for sponsoring a new member is that the prospective new member must have met at least 5 directors and at least 3 of the Membership Committee.

Help us give Elaine and the other folks at the Camden Yacht Club a break! Please use the website for information. As time marches on and postal rates go up, the CYC and other organizations are turning more towards using the web for basic information, like what are the times for meetings, events and functions.
It's easy. Just log on to http://www.camdenyachtclub.org/, and then please book mark it on your browser so you can get to it quickly. In the Log In section, type in your first name(space)last name-like ¬"John Smith", or "Jane Smith"(each name of spouses should work). Then put in what you think is your password. If your password is incorrect, you will be sent an e-mail with a temporary password, good for 24 hours, during which time you should change your password to something memorable-like the name of your boat or something else that is easy to remember.
We are presently trying to see if we can have a public section of the website, so that if the originator of a message wants to have a public notice, and it doesn't violate anyone's privacy, it will be available. Opinions vary on this one, and if you have some thoughts, please let me know at: bowditch@roadrunner.com
Also, if you are having trouble with logging on, or want to be in touch, send me an e-mail, or if it is urgent, call me at 207-236-2272. Like what we are trying to promote at the Camden Yacht Club, I prefer e-mails.
Once you begin using the web site, chances are you won't go back to the old way of getting information. Good luck, and summer is around the corner. Have a great season.
Yoga at the Yacht Club!
Wednesday mornings throughout the summer, we will be trying yoga on the porch at the Camden Yacht Club. Initially classes will be free to members. Class will be lead by local yoga instructor Colleen Duggan. Colleen teaches in the Iyengar method- which focuses on alignment and precision in the poses. The class will be dynamic and active, moving through a full range of poses-standing poses, twists, inversions, twists, backbends, and forward bends. All levels are welcome; beginners to advanced- any one willing to be in their body and challenge themselves.
When: Wednesday mornings at 7:30am, starting July 1st (please note there will be no class the week of July 15th). Class will be an hour and a half long.
What to bring: a yoga mat, blankets if you have them
Cost: Free to members, $10/class for non-members
Questions? Please call Colleen Duggan, 236-6178

Food Service "Minimum" Billing: Although we have printed this information before, for the benefit of our new members, we will print it again. In order to support the Food Service portion of our club, the Board of Directors voted to institute a $100 minimum bill for Food Service. This means that any member family that does not purchase at least $100 in lunches only will be billed at season's end for the difference between their actual purchases and $100. This minimum will not apply to Senior and Honorary members.
CYC Merchandise: As usual, CYC will have a variety of merchandise available in the office this summer.....glassware, burgees, cookbooks, polo shirts, summer jackets, vests, hats and more. Please come take a look.
Yearbooks: The 2009 yearbooks will be ready by May 23rd. For those members who attend the Chicken Barbecue on May 23rd, your yearbook will be given to you when you pick up your name tag.
Please be aware that no more than 15 people are permitted on the 2nd floor interior balcony of the Clubhouse great room at one time and no more than 20 are permitted in the exterior balcony/covered porch at any one time.
Camden Yacht Club
Rules and Regulations
This is a friendly, general, reminder of some of our more basic do's and don'ts. Most are obvious, but it is good to remind everyone as the CYC season approaches, as follows:
All of the above are common sense. Please use common sense at all times and enjoy the use of your club.
The Yacht Club has been added to the list maintained at the Town Office of those businesses and organizations that have pledged not to apply toxic chemicals to their lawns. This is one of several "going green" steps being taken or considered by the Club.
